What is braces made of?

Braces, commonly known as dental braces, are orthodontic appliances used to straighten and align teeth. They are made of various materials, including:

  1. Metal: Traditional metal braces are made of stainless steel. These braces consist of metal brackets bonded to the teeth's surfaces, connected by archwires. The archwires work to exert pressure on the teeth, gradually moving them into the desired position.

  2. Ceramic: Ceramic braces are similar in design to metal braces, but the brackets are made of clear or tooth-colored ceramic material. This makes them less noticeable compared to metal braces. The archwires can also be tooth-colored, further reducing their visibility.

  3. Lingual: Lingual braces are placed on the inner surface of the teeth, making them practically invisible when smiling. These braces are customized to fit each individual tooth's shape accurately.

  4. Invisalign: Invisalign is a popular alternative to traditional braces. It consists of a series of clear, removable aligners made of BPA-free plastic. These aligners are custom-made for each patient and need to be changed every few weeks to gradually shift teeth into alignment.

Regardless of the material used, braces work by applying continuous pressure on the teeth over an extended period. This pressure helps to reshape the bone surrounding the teeth, allowing them to move to their ideal positions. The treatment duration can vary, typically ranging from several months to a few years, depending on the severity of the misalignment. Regular adjustments and check-ups with an orthodontist are necessary during the treatment period to ensure progress and address any issues that may arise.
